Vivi Vassileva has long since established herself as a worthy successor to Martin Grubinger. Described as "an artist who engages audiences and explores and pushes the boundaries of the percussion world," she is celebrated not only for her brilliant technique, but also for her outstanding virtuosity and athletic performance. At the forefront of a new generation of percussionists, she showcases the drums as an instrument of the 21st century.
Born in Hof, she began her studies at the age of ten with Claudio Estay and was later accepted into the German Federal Youth Orchestra as its youngest member. Further successes followed, including prizes at international competitions and special prizes at the renowned ARD Music Competition in 2014. She received the 2016 Kulturkreis Gasteig Music Prize for her original composition and arrangement of the Bulgarian folk song "Kalino Mome." In 2017, she received the Bavarian Art Prize and in 2023, the Leonard Bernstein Prize. Vivi Vassileva is a graduate of the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where she studied under the direction of Martin Grubinger.
Vivi Vassileva presents modern and contemporary percussion music with the Extasi Ensemble. The program includes pieces that have become classics of the genre, such as Iannis Xenakis' "Okho," Maki Ishii's "Dyu-Ha," Keiko Abe's "The Wave," Kalevi Aho's "Sieidi," and the first part of Steve Reich's "Drumming," as well as works by younger composers such as Daníel Bjarnason and Oriol Cruixent.
The audience can look forward to an evening full of energy, timbres and emotions.
