In December 1875, violinist Emile Cousin (1847-1906), recently settled in Versailles, founded a private chamber music society. He quickly conceived the idea of creating a school to complement the sections of his orchestra. Intrigued by the project, the municipality decided to open a music school on December 2, 1878, at 1 Avenue de Paris. One hundred and forty-seven students benefited from instruction by professors in violin, viola, cello, double bass, wind instruments, and music theory. In 1883, the school moved to 11 Rue de Jouvencel and adopted the title of Conservatory. Thanks to the treasures of the municipal archives and the Conservatory's music library, a brochure was produced for the occasion. It retraces the major stages in the institution's development since its creation and provides portraits of the composers and artists who have led it… not to mention a number of delightful anecdotes!
For this anniversary of the Conservatory, pupils, students, teachers and guests are giving a series of concerts and meetings celebrating the artists and composers who have marked its history.
