Ludwig van Beethoven also served as inspiration for the New Zealand composer John Psathas' percussion concerto Leviathan .

He took Beethoven's deep connection to nature, particularly evident in his Pastoral Symphony, as the starting point for a work about the apocalypse.

This also gave it the title Leviathan, which refers to a sea monster from Jewish mythology.

The challenge for the percussion soloist, who must play a total of 14 different percussion instruments, is truly exhilarating

.No less monumental is Shostakovich's First Symphony, considering it was composed by a student of just 18 years old.

Besides the enormous orchestral forces, it is the youthful originality and incredible attention to detail that still amaze today.
