On April 21, the grand opening of the V International Drumtime Percussion Competition took place at the Dvortsovoy Concert Hall of the St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture. This year, the competition celebrates its first anniversary, bringing together talented young musicians from different regions of Russia and abroad for the fifth time.
The official ceremony was opened by the title partner of the competition — the drum show «Drumtime», which charged the hall with an energetic performance. The rector of SPbGIK Alexander Sergeevich Turgaev addressed the audience with a welcoming speech. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of the competition as a cultural phenomenon of international scale and wished the contestants success.
A special gift for the audience was the performance of a member of the jury, a teacher of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, a laureate of international competitions Mikhail Putkov (vibraphone) and a teacher of the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg Conservatory, a laureate of international competitions Olesya Morozova (piano). The duo performed the compositions "Piazonore" (comp. Alexey Gerassimez) and "Atalanta" (comp. John Psathas), which were met with thunderous applause.
The international competition "Drumtime" includes a rich cultural and educational program, which includes competitive auditions, master classes on playing the marimba and orchestral percussion, performances by jury members, invited artists, and competition laureates.
We would like to express our gratitude for preparing the program and organizing the concert to the opening director, acting head of the department of theatrical performances and holidays A. E. Tovpents, the competition curator, associate professor of the department of wind and percussion instruments N. A. Ponomarev, and the staff of the department of wind and percussion instruments (head of department A. A. Kirillov).
