For centuries, the carillon has sounded high above our heads, in towers overlooking the city. But what if it leaves its familiar surroundings and moves among other instruments? In Beyond the  Bells , the innovative chamber music project by carillonneur Jasper Depraetere , the carillon steps out of the tower and seeks a new balance in chamber music.

Carillonneur Jasper Depraetere invites percussionist Jasmijn Vandecaetsbeek and pianist Lenny Bui-Vandeput to explore the boundaries of sound, rhythm and interplay together. The carillon, often considered a soloistic and monumental instrument, becomes a subtle, rhythmic and harmonic player within an ensemble in this program.

The common thread in this concert? Movement. Literally, because the mobile carillon moves from tower to stage, but also musically: in the undulating patterns of Catching Shadows (Ivan Trevino), the stillness and drama of Nocturne (Jeroen Malaise), and the pulsating power of  Atalanta (John Psathas) with electronics.

Especially for this project, the two promising Belgian composers Pieter Opsteyn and Jonas Gedeshi are writing brand new works in which the carillon is given an unexpected role, which can be heard in world premiere at 30CC. Here, we do not look at what a carillon should be, but at what it can be.

Beyond the Bells is a musical adventure in which tradition and innovation enter into dialogue. A rare opportunity to hear the carillon in a completely new light.
